Hungary will make the border crossing requirements stricter from September 1 in order to prevent the spreading of coronavirus, because there are more and more infected people in the neighboring states, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on the state radio. He didn't cite any details about the new restrictions.

– When the school year starts, the border crossing system which is in effect during the summer will no longer function – Orban said.

According to the current rules, returnees from countries with a high infection rate must go into quarantine for 14 days, except if they have two negative coronavirus tests not older than five days and done within 48 hours within each other.

In mid-July, Hungary put Serbia in the yellow category.

Serbian citizens in transit through Hungary can pass through the state in case they can provide proof of the purpose of the trip, the destination country and the fact that the entry to the destination country, as Hungary's neighbor, is secured.

Serbian citizens must leave the Hungarian territory within 24 hours, have the right of using only a certain transit route and can only stop at certain rest stops if necessary (health or technical reasons), says the website of the Embassy of Serbia in Budapest.

As of Friday, Hungary had registered 5,046 infected with coronavirus, with 609 deaths recorded.
