Serbian Construction Minister Zorana Mihajlovic has stated that negotiations are already being had with the Chinese company CRBC about the construction of a high-speed railway from Belgrade to Nis and Presevo and that, in the next three months, a draft commercial contract should be prepared.

The minister expects the works to start next year if a preferential credit from China is secured as well.

Mihajlovic told the press that it would be a shame for the country not to have a high-speed railway in the south and reminded that a high-speed railway from Belgrade to the Hungarian border, with a projected maximum speed of 200 km/h, was being built.

– This is a great investment of around EUR 2 billion, which is how much the high-speed railway from Subotica to Belgrade also costs. Still, it's an investment in the future. We have chosen to work with the Chinese company CRBC and in the next few months the Serbian Railways Infrastructure, which is already negotiating with the Chinese company, has the task of preparing a draft commercial contract – the minister said.

She also says that they have contacted the Chinese government about issuing a preferential credit, as this is an enormous investment.

– I believe that we will adhere to the joint plan, which is to have a draft commercial contract within three months. Parallel with this, the projects and being prepared, and if the authorization and the financing are secured, I believe the works could start next year – Mihajlovic said.

Tendering for repair of road crossings in September

She says that the government has secured a credit of EUR 15 million from the World Bank in an attempt to further develop and repair road crossings, whereby another 58 critical crossings will be additionally secured.

She adds that the public procurement procedure for these works will open in September.

Representatives of the Serbian Railways Infrastructure pointed out that, with the implementation of rail regulations on the road crossings in Nis, traffic safety is not jeopardized even when the barriers are out of order.

– Even when the barriers on the road crossings in Nis are not working, traffic safety is not jeopardized. In that situation, rail regulations apply and the staff acts accordingly. This means that the trains are stopped before the road crossing and, after a sound warning, pass through the road crossing only after it is determined that there's no one on the railway and that there's no possibility of an accident occurring – the director general of the Serbian Railways Infrastructure, Nebojsa Surlan, told the press regarding the reporting of certain media about a malfunction on the road crossing in the Nis neighborhood of Suvi Do.
