The export of alcoholic drinks from Sumadija and Pomoravlje, including plum brandy, has grown by 75% and is expected to exceed EUR 1 million this year. The president of the Regional Chamber of Commerce of Kragujevac, Predrag Lucic, told the press that, in the first nine months, a growth of exports by 75% had been recorded and that the value of the export of strong alcoholic drinks had amounted to EUR 814,000.
There are around 40 fruit brandy producers in Sumadija and Pomoravlje, and several of the leading ones are also the biggest exporters.
Lucic pointed out that as much as two thirds of the total export of fruit brandies produced in Sumadija and Pomoravlje has gone to the USA and Australia.
The Fruit Brandy Festival in Kragujevac will be held on December 5 at Hotel Kragujevac, with 35 participants, 30 of which are producers of fruit brandies, whereas the other five are Sumadija Slivovitz distilleries.
The “Sumadija Slivovitz” brand has a protected designation of origin and is subject to strict rules. The register producer and the fruit must come from the territory of the Sumadija District, and the brandy needs to contain at least 20% of the Crvena Ranka plum variety, whereas the rest needs to consist of the Cacanska Rodna and Cacanska Lepotica varieties.
The brandy needs to mature for at least 18 months in oak barrels of 500 to 1,000 liters, be distilled in a copper cauldron of 100 to 500 liters and be analyzed twice before it is put on the market.
