According to the explanation given by the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, the development of combined (intermodal) transport will enable a quicker and more economic shipping of products and goods to end users in Serbia, as is the case in developed countries, Politika writes.
– One of the key links in the combined transport chain is the combined transport terminal. It is a place where road and rail transport intersect, where trains carrying containers are unloaded, with the containers stored and distributed to end users by road vehicle within a 150-km radius. The entire transport and logistics chain would be realized in line with the basic logistics principle of “door to door” and “on time” – the ministry says.
This would also enable a reduction in logistics costs contributing to product prices in Serbia, while also moving these activities out of city centers, unloading the traffic and reducing the negative environmental impact and the damage done to the traffic infrastructure.
The Decree on Incentive Measures towards an Upgrade of Combined Transport, recently adopted by the Government of Serbia, defines the maximum percentage of the co-financing of the investment.
The ministry emphasizes that several privately owned terminals and one state owned terminal operate successfully in Serbia and notes that there are indications that the private terminals will develop further, as this is a profitable business, especially if the terminal is a part of a logistics center.
They also remind that the necessary procedures for the realization of the project of the construction of the new intermodal terminal in Batajnica is in progress.
