Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs, Tako Kono said that the interest of Japanese companies in Serbia is obviously growing and further development of economic relations between two countries was to be expected.

– Serbia has the high quality workforce considering the low incomes while the progress in recent economic and fiscal reforms is remarkable, Kono told Politika daily.

Kono, who arrived in Belgrade on Thursday, said that it was “very important for more Japanese companies to know about this attractive business environment” and added that both Japan and Serbia need to work on keeping the Japanese companies in the loop to further develop economic cooperation.

– I heard that most of our companies investing in Serbia are pleased with tax benefits, the quality of the workforce and Serbian government`s overall conduct. It is crucial that other Japanese companies be informed of the success of those companies already investing in Serbia. In addition, it is important for the information about business conditions in Serbian reaches Japanese SMEs as well, said Kono.

He assessed that relations between Serbia and Japan have progresses immensely in all domains through Western Balkans Cooperation Initiative that Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe proposed when he visited Serbia in January 2018

Kono said that the Toyo Tires company decided to open a facility in Indjija for tire production and EUR 390 million were to be invested. He reminded that ever since Abe was Japan`s Prime Minister, Mayekawa opened a factory in Smedeevo, JTI expanded its capacities by opening a new facility while Itochu was confirmed as a partner in the construction of regional center for waste management in Vinca.

Kono added he was familiar with the fact that Serbia had gone through a rough period in the 90s and the beginning of the 2000s and that by taking on a crucial role in the stability and peace of the region it had become a country with enough drive to achieve progress in economic reforms.

– Japan gives more and more importance to its relations with Serbia, a country dedicated to implementing reform with the goal of joining EU, a fact significant to us because we share the same values as EU, Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs added.
