The expropriation of the parcels located on the route of the future railway bypass route around Nis is progressing in line with the plan, and Ljubivoje Slavkovic, the member of the work group of the Ministry of Transport directly in charge of this big project that people of Nis have waited for for over two decades, says that the construction will start in two years. The railway passing through the city's center should therefore be made history by 2022.

– I hope that we will complete the expropriation of the land on the route from Popovac to Sicevo, encompassing as many as 1,900 parcels, by next June. The formerly building land has already been repurposed as agricultural land in the land registry, thanks to which the owners will receive larger compensations – Slavkovic says and notes that only two complaints have been sent so far to 1,800 decisions adopted and that they will be solved through property procedures.

He adds that court experts have just examined the residential and industrial facilities on the route. There is also the displacement plan, an inevitable part of the documentation, binding for both the Serbian Railways and the competent ministry.

According to the announcements of those in charge, after the international tender takes place, the contractor for the Nis railway bypass route could be picked by the end of 2019, and the completion of the works and the full removal of the rail route from the center of Nis are planned for 2022.

Grants for two railways

As the Ministry of Transport, Construction and Infrastructure announced, the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) will support these works in Serbia's south with a total of EUR 5.5 million in grants.

The amount of two million euros has been approved for the preparation of the project needed for the obtaining of the building permit for a single-track bypass rail route around the city on the Nisava, which is also a part of the project of the modernization of the rail route of Corridor 10, from Nis to Dimitrovgrad. The remaining EUR 3.5 million is meant for the preparation of a preliminary project with a feasibility study and an environmental impact assessment for the modernization of the railway on Corridor 10, on the section Nis-Presevo-Macedonian border.
